Williams joins Pirates

The BATT Academy is happy to announce that one of their own, Anthony Williams, has accepted a position with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization for the 2011 sesaon. He will join the Pirates front office working in Video and Advanced Scouting.
Anthony has successfully coached at UMBC and Frostburg State University and has been a long time member and instructor here at the BATT. Congrats and best of luck Anthony!
Giants sign Josh Banks
The San Francisco Giants announced they have signed right handed pitcher Josh Banks to a minor league deal. Banks, who graduated from Severna Park High School (’00) attended Florida International University and was a 2nd round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003.
Josh made his big league debut with Toronto in 2007 and the following season was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres. Banks logged 115 innings and 17 starts with San Diego between 2008-2009. In 2010, Banks made only one appearance with the Houston Astros and became a free agent after the season before signing with San Francisco last week.
Josh spends the off-season working out here at the BATT in preparation for spring training and his persistance and dedication to the game of baseball is a great example for our younger players to follow. Congratulations Josh and we wish you the best of luck this upcoming season!
Kendall moving up to AA Bowie
We would like to send a special congratulations to long time BATT instructor Gary Kendall on being named Manager of the Bowie Baysox (AA Orioles) for the upcoming 2011 season.
Kendall has spent the last ten seasons coaching in the Orioles organization at various levels including Bluefield (rookie) Aberdeen (Short-Season A) and Delmarva (Low A) in additon to running the Orioles extended spring training in Florida. Managing the Baysox who compete in the Eastern League will mark Kendall’s first season at the AA level.
Gary has been a big part of the BATT family for a long time and continues to play a role in helping us develop players in this area. Whether it’s a high school or college player trying to reach the next level or an 8 year old who dreams of being a big leaguer, Gary spends time working with players of all ages, throws batting practice every Monday and occasionally will hold free clinics here at the BATT.
Gary, thank you for all of your dedication and support here at the BATT, and we look forward to seeing some games in Bowie this year. Congratulations and best of luck this upcoming season!

MLB Playoff Recap and World Series Preview – Anthony Williams
Well if you read this blog last time, you’ll know I predicted the Phillies and Yankees to meet in the World Series. So much for that. On paper it looked like a lock, but yet again, that’s why they make you play the game. The Rangers and Giants both won their respective pennants in six games to set up one of the most unlikely World Series matchups in recent history. One of the biggest storylines of this postseason has been Cliff Lee. The Phillies had him, the Yankees thought they had traded for him, but it was the Rangers who swooped in and got him at the trade deadline, and they are playing in the World Series largely because of him. MLB Playoff Recap and LCS Preview – Anthony Williams
Many people who follow baseball, and even some who don’t for that matter, often complain that the season is too long. It’s a six month regular season, 162 games that began way back in April. I’m not sure whether or not baseball has or ever would consider shortening the season but I do know one thing: there is no better month for baseball than October. I just can’t imagine having the playoffs in August or September, it just wouldn’t have the same feel. The crisp air, the smell of fall, October is perfect. Read the rest of this entry »
