Anthony, I am writing a paper on the banning of BESR bats and the switch to BBCOR bats, I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me to help me with research in my paper?
- What was the biggest motive to switch from BESR to BBCOR?
- What is the ultimate goal in the switch?
- Do you think that changing the bats will in fact make the game safer?
- Do you think it is logical to switch from aluminum to wood instead?

The adjustment to wood bats, from college to pro ball has been an issue for several years...there have been many "Big-Money Mistakes" made by pro ball, to the point that now all pro scouts must see a player using wood prior to grading them.

Many hitters have a hard time due to the composition of hitting with metal, and the large sweet spot, combined with a large cushy leather wrapped handle. In other words metal bats have allowed hitters to get away with poor mechanics, mimimal hand slotting and terrible swing paths, that if they were swinging wood would leave them with a STUMP in their hands. The most common mistake we see is "Over-Gripping" the bat......do this with wood and see how your hands feel !!

While the new metal bats will take down some of the power numbers, maybe now we will begin to separate the boys from the true hitters.......there's still nothing like the feel and sound of wood

Thanks for the comment Justin. Many people, myself included, would love to see the NCAA switch to wood bats. I already know of a Division II conference that plays with wood currently. However, I think the big bat making companies have a major influence in this. They can sell aluminum bats at double or even triple what they could sell a wood bat for. Another issue is the amount of broken wood bats that a school would have in a season. If they switch to wood, that increase in demand is almost certainly going to drive up the price of wood bats. Schools will have to pay more money to keep purchasing wood bats. So in the end, perhaps the bat making companies would still come out making a lot of money?? I think the idea with the new aluminum bats is to make it almost like wood, but less chance of the bat breaking. Should be an interesting season... Good luck!

Our school just got a shipment of the new voodoo in this past week. I don't like them one bit. There isnt much pop at all, and a very small sweet spot. Which will really show who the "real" hitters are. I dont understand why they just dont switch to wood.

I argee that Texas is the favorite and is expected to win the World Series.
This should also point out how close the Orioles are to beating the Yankees and Rays. With the addition of a front line starting pitcher and two hitters in the middle of the line-up, I think the Orioles can compete with anyone. With Showalter in place the expectations are in order. Now it is up to MacPhail to open the wallet and acquire what they need.

I agree Jacob, the players in the Ripken World Series are much more talented players. The LLWS seems to have lost its luster but it does do a good job of promoting the sport to today's youth.

Tom - thank you for the comment. A lot of the time, it's just a matter of finding what school is the right "fit" as opposed to what school has the most notable baseball program. I wish your son the best of luck and hope that he has a tremendous experience in college.
