Softball Clinic
We’re happy to report that our first softball clinic was a great success. We had over 35 softball players of all ages attend the free pitching clinic here at the BATT Academy.
A special thanks to Jack Crandell, Joe Cunningham, Paul Tewey, and Carey Jacobson for putting on the clinic. Instruction covered basic pitching mechanics, how to prepare yourself to pitch, and the mentality that it takes to be a successful pitcher.
In addition, our next fast-pitch softball clinic will be on Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 from 11am-1pm at the BATT Academy. The cost of the clinic will be $25 per player. Read the rest of this entry »

Aluminum Bat Controversy
Talk to any current college baseball coach or player for an extended amount of time and the topic of the new aluminum bat rule is bound to come up. There has been much discussion regarding what constitutes a legal bat, does this affect high school players, how much are the new bats going to cost etc. So I thought I would take some time to clear the air and hopefully answer some questions regarding the new rules.
First, effective January 1, 2011, the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA will all be adopting the BBCOR standards for aluminum baseball bats. BBCOR stands for the Ball-Bat Coefficiet of Resitution. It is simply a new, more advanced testing standard which takes account for bat inertia. Only bats that display the BBCOR certified label will be deemed legal bats at the college level. The idea is to reduce the exit speed of the ball off the bat and ultimately close the gap between aluminum and wood bats. As a current college coach, I saw first hand this fall of the difference these new bats make. Certainly a significant decrease in distance with the new BBCOR bats. Much like Major League Baseball this year, I think we will see an increased emphasis on pitching and defense and perhaps also less inflated offensive statistics across the board. Strength & Conditioning @ the BATT
Speed, Agility, & Strength (SAS)
Our SAS program is designed to enhance the athletes speed and quickness, while also increasing strength and flexibility.
The course is heavy in plyometric exercises which forces the athlete to utilize their fast-twitch muscle fibers. Some of the areas of focus include:
College Recruiting – First Impressions
First Impressions
When you meet face to face for the first time with a college coach, you have probably been told to shake hands firmly and look him in the eyes as he speaks. You have also probably been told to speak decisively, and with good grammar. Hopefully you have also been told to call him by his last name, such as Coach Jones, not Coach Bill.
However did you know that most coaches and their staff do as much research on you as you do on them? How does this happen? Your references are only one part of the equation, you already know they are on your side….they’re YOUR references. What most student athletes fail to realize is that, in this electronic age every thing you put out there is usually easily obtained. In other words even us old-guy coaches have Facebook pages, and subscribe to My Space…..so what’s on yours? Remember, your first impression may take place before you even meet a coach. Check your cell phone voicemail greeting, how would it sound to a coach? Do you make an impression that’s positive as a student athlete? You want coaches to be excited about recruiting you and not leave questions in their mind as to your character and makeup. So………check your stuff, make sure your wall doesn’t create a wall in the mind of any coach. Make sure your first impression is a positive one, whether in person or not.
World Series Preview
MLB Playoff Recap and World Series Preview – Anthony Williams
Well if you read this blog last time, you’ll know I predicted the Phillies and Yankees to meet in the World Series. So much for that. On paper it looked like a lock, but yet again, that’s why they make you play the game. The Rangers and Giants both won their respective pennants in six games to set up one of the most unlikely World Series matchups in recent history. One of the biggest storylines of this postseason has been Cliff Lee. The Phillies had him, the Yankees thought they had traded for him, but it was the Rangers who swooped in and got him at the trade deadline, and they are playing in the World Series largely because of him. MLB Playoff Recap and LCS Preview
MLB Playoff Recap and LCS Preview – Anthony Williams
Many people who follow baseball, and even some who don’t for that matter, often complain that the season is too long. It’s a six month regular season, 162 games that began way back in April. I’m not sure whether or not baseball has or ever would consider shortening the season but I do know one thing: there is no better month for baseball than October. I just can’t imagine having the playoffs in August or September, it just wouldn’t have the same feel. The crisp air, the smell of fall, October is perfect. Read the rest of this entry »
300 Yard Shuttle
(From Left to Right) Gary Helmick – Baltimore Orioles, Anthony Williams – UMBC.
The 300 yard shuttle tests the player’s extended speed and quickness. Many professional organizations put their players through this test during spring training. Great off-season tip for speed training and a solid benchmark of where you stand! The goal: finish 1st set under a minute, 2 minute rest, finish 2nd set under a minute. Good luck!
