The Importance of Getting Ahead in the Count for Hitters

As a hitter I always found that it was much easier to hit when I was ahead in the count, for example 2-0 or 3-0 opposed to hitting behind in the count like 0-2 or 1-2.  Many guys get in the habit of taking too many pitches and before they know it they are behind in the count and at the pitchers mercy.  Once you get yourself behind in the count it is much more difficult to dig yourself out.  The chart below shows the averages of what guys hit when they’re 0-2 and after, as well as the averages at 3-0 and after.  This shows that hitters that get ahead of the count have much better success then when they are behind.  Many pitchers will try and steal an early strike so look for it and hit it! -Matt Acevedo
