Major League Firsts

On behalf of the BATT Academy, we would like to send a very special congratulations to Steve Clevenger (Mt. St. Joseph HS) and Steve Lombardozzi Jr. (Atholton HS) on a tremendous season in which both guys were called up to the big leagues.

Clevenger was called up by the Cubs and collected his first major league hit, a double off the Padres Wade Leblanc.  He went 1-4 and has an official .250 career major league batting average.  Steve split time between AA Tennessee and AAA Iowa and had a combined .319 batting average for the season.

Lombardozzi was called up by the Nationals and collected 6 hits in 31 at-bats over 13 games after hitting over .300 in AAA for the Syracuse Chiefs.  His first major league hit proved to be a game winner, an RBI single off of the Mets knuckle baller, RA Dickey.  Lombo has gotten people’s attention with his steady play and consistency at each level he’s been.  His name was in the news in late July when the Nationals were in trade talks with  the Twins, coincidently the team his father played for.  The Nationals were reportedly reluctant to part with Lombo as part of a trade that would of sent Denard Span to the Nats.

To see the effort that both of these guys have put in and to see them climb the ranks and finally make it to the top is truly incredible.  I’m sure they will both tell you they have much more work to do if they want to stay there but let us acknowledge what has been achieved.  This is the highest level of baseball in the world, and they both made it there.  That dream that every young player has as a little kid, to make it to the Major Leagues, they did it.  I hope their accomplishment serves as a source of motivation for all, regardless of who we are.  Anything is possible.

Congrats guys on your first few games as a Major League Baseball player, here’s to many more!

Ross drafted by Atlanta Braves

After a stellar senior season, Greg Ross can now add 18th round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves to an already impressive list of accolades.  The hard throwing right hander from Frostburg State University garnered much attention after going 11-2 with a 1.49 era including 112 strikeouts, most in single season school history.  He was named Capital Athletic Conference player of the year, and earned 1st team All-American Honors en route to helping Frostburg State win the CAC conference championship in their first year in the league.  Ross joins current Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman in an elite group of players who have been drafted from Frostburg State.  Now, Ross will have the chance to toe the rubber in the professional ranks, beginning with the Danville Braves of the Appalachian League.

Ross (Loch Raven HS) began his collegiate career at CCBC Essex before transferring to Frostburg State for his junior and senior seasons.  Greg has put in time at the BATT each of the last two off-seasons and truly epitomizes the term work ethic.  For those who know Greg and have seen the work he puts in, this achievement comes to no surprise.  His drive and determination are unmatched.  We are very proud to add him to our growing list of guys who are continuing their careers in professional baseball!
